Review of Shiki
Shiki is pretty good as far as vampire anime go. I've seen better but oh there are so many that're worse. Shiki tries to give you a moral dilemma about what makes things acceptable, what it means to be human and the morality of murder. I think they pull this off pretty well but it's not like they really broke any new ground with any hot takes. Shiki's takes are lukewarm and I'm still drinking it cause it's not bad. As far as the plot goes, it's pretty okay but once you get into the meat of the story, itslows down a lot. I like slow burns a lot and I know that story telling like this is pretty common in horror works but I feel like the horror itself isn't spooky enough to carry the weight of the story. It's not that it's slow that's the issue exactly, more just that the story feels directionless for a while. Spoilers for the first episode in the next paragraph.
I really like what was done with Megumi in the first episode. The way that they mislead you into believing she's the protagonist to make the deaths in the village feel much heavier is a bamboozle I'm always here for and genuinely did not see coming.
The story is pretty tasteful and while it definitely isn't perfect, I'd say it's good.
