Death of a close friend is very painful, and when they die just after you quarrel with them then it's too excruciating. Yes, this is the story of Yadomi Jinta(Jintan), who fought with his childhood friend Honma Meiko(Menma) and in that commotion she lost her life. Years later Jinta, now in high school, starts to see Menma again. She tells that she cannot leave the world unless her last wish isn't fulfilled. Then this story revolves around how Jintan tries to figure out Menma's wish, how he reunites with his other childhood friends and how they together fulfill Menma's last wish. The anime also explores the feelingsof each character, including romantic ones.

The story is well written, giving importance to each character. The anime explains in a beautiful way to accept our mistakes rather than blaming it on others.

Yukiatsu and Menma's mother could never accept Menma's death and the anime shows how our emotions tend to make us unstable and not accept the truth.
Anaru's character is an epitome of people who're easily influenced by others, which can be wrong sometimes.
Jintan is a perfect example for coolness( Man, he skipped school almost everyday). Jintan is a perfect epitome of human beings; doing things first then reflecting on it. But his character also strives to not forget his mistake and rather correct it when life permits.
Poppo's character is the definition of freedom. He travels around the world. living a carefree life. But his biggest regret is that he couldn't save his friends- Menma from dying and Jintan from taking the wrong route in life.
Tsuruko is just a logical character who tells us to be more rational and not depend on feelings alone. But her character develops in such a way that she realizes even feelings sometimes are more important than logic.

Overall this is a fun-emotion-sadness filled anime which is bound to make you cry. Even though first 5 episodes may be slow paced but it's worth watching.
