Well. Honestly, where do I begin with Black Butler? This anime left me with so many mixed emotions I simply can't make sense of it all. I'll start with the positives, I suppose. These positives being what kept me watching despite the negatives. Most significantly: The art. This show is gorgeous. Though I won't lie and say many of the angles and styles aren't reminiscent of yaoi and BL, I also couldn't say that the animation was bad, or anywhere near. I particularly loved the outfit design. Especially Ciel's outfits, the main character. Well, not counting the dress. I also enjoyed the characters, especially Ciel. While in some cases he did seem like a pretty obvious fanservice character (and a thinly veiled definitely-not-shota), I liked him regardless. He's an incredibly stubborn character, which is frustrating, though I'd say that ultimately it's a frustration that adds to the experience of watching the show. Sebastian is a bit bland, but honestly, it would kind of spoil his character if he had any real depth.

Now, the negatives.

Well, the story premise is quite interesting. A ten year old boy who makes a deal with a literal demon, trading his soul for revenge? It's a great setup, but it all honesty it falls completely flat.

Most of the episodes are filler, and consist of little battles to be fought that are never brought up again and serve no purpose to the overall story. Sometimes they're enjoyable, sometimes they're boring, but none of them are very satisfying. When the plot finally does kick in, it's fascinating!

But... it's also rushed, and confusing. Episode 24 left me with more questions than answers, especially with episode 25 completely ignoring what happened right before. I don't know if that's only true of the Netflix edition, but it was frustrating and confusing regardless.

Ultimately, do I recommend this anime? Yes.

Will I be watching season 2? Absolutely.

Why do I recommend it? It's enjoyable. Especially for anyone into guys. There's also some LGBT content--and I don't just mean the vague yaoi stuff. There's two characters hinted (well, more than hinted--it's pretty much confirmed) to be transgender. No spoilers, though.

Why will I be watching season 2? I've been roped in by these characters. I care about Ciel. For anyone who gets overly invested in emotional characters, I can almost guarantee this anime is for you in that regard.
