Review of Shiki

I originally chose to watch Shiki only knowing that it was a horror anime, and that Shiki meant "corpse demon". I hadn't watched anything of this genre before, and decided that it was finally time, and I must say, I am very happy that I made that decision. To try to review this with no spoilers, Shiki caught me off guard as a horror anime. When I think of a horror movie/tv show, I think of the main characters making poor decisions, that will normally end in them being killed off one my one, but I could pretty quickly tellthat this might not be the case with Shiki. I have seen reviews/comments saying that they regret watching this, and it is just filled with disturbing content, I believe that anyone that says that just watched their first horror film and was more focused on looking away at any "scary parts". Shiki, besides obviously making you not want to be in the dark for a day or two, shows fantastic character development, and has the characters making decisions that, if I personally were in this situation, would most likely be forced to make, so in a sense it is also relatable instead of just being a group of highschoolers in a camp getting killed one by one. You get to witness the slow mental deterioration of the people involved, and see how some start to enjoy killing, whereas others do the exact opposite, and will even take the side of the enemy simply because they have seen how, in the end, people are monsters too. This is one of the few shows that I have watched, that overtime, I actually want what is supposed to be the antagonist to prevail, defeat the main characters, and start again somewhere else. In the end, this show is different from a lot of others that I've seen, because at the end of the day, there isn't really a protagonist or antagonist, you as the viewer can chose what side you wish to win. I would highly recommend watching this, because in my opinion it isn't a horror show, sure is has a few creepy characters, but you get to see the struggles of both sides, and how it has affected them mentally throughout there lives.
