Review of Hyouka

Hyouka is a detective, mystery solving anime and as with most mystery solving anime, the main detectives are high school students. But unlike anime like Ghost Hunt, Detective School Q, or Detective Conan, the main character is not a mystery nut and he also doesn’t go around solving murder mysteries, outsmarting the professionals detectives. Oreki is very uninterested in being a detective and solves relatively mundane mysteries at the behest of his friends who are enamoured by his abilities. Oreki meets Chitanda, the character that pushes Oreki to use his mystery solving skills, in the literature club and there he solves his first mystery ofthe series, finding out why the door was locked when Chitanda herself had not locked it. The mysteries are always very informative in discovering things about how certain people in the school operate, in internal drama in clubs, and in the history of the school. There’s definitely something poetic about finding that there are mysteries all around you hidden in plain sight, and Hyouka definitely captures that feeling.
