Review of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
This is my first time making a review btw X'3 "Think about death" This is, like Clannad After Story, a drama about dealing with death of a family/friend. The main plot based on the idea of what a dead person would say if he/she saw you mourning after 10yrs have passed. Normally, people would say he/she would want you to move on and make the best of life. Not to blame oneself, not to forget, but to accept and understand. One of the best things about this drama is the symbolism. The opening for "we still do not know the name of the flower we saw that day"featured the flower known as the "forget-me-not" as in do not forget the one who died. The title implies that no one wants to remember the day Menma died.
"In the end, my wish was to let everyone be happy"
Menma is selfless and thinks of others over herself. She loves each of her friends dearly. However, only Jintan can see her. The primary reason for her return is that she has a earth bounding regret- She wasn't able to fulfill the promise she made with Jintan's mother. She does not remember immediately, but that is the sole reason for her sudden appearance to Jintan. She isn't sure what her wish is and even when she admits what her wish was, it isn't guaranteed that it really was her wish. When her initial wish becomes true, she begins to fade and Jintan was able to move on. She later becomes visible to everyone. Most likely, she made another wish to allow everyone to finally move on after mourning for her after 10yrs.
"Gee, another love triangle?"
Didn't quite like the cliche'd love triangle subplot. I felt like only Poppo was the only genuine character among the group. Both guys were in love with the girl that died and both girls were jealous of the girl who died. Only Poppo actually cared for her as a friend. I'm guessing it's to relate to as many situations as possible, however the way they went about it was far too cliche'd. Menma's family however was well done.
If you watched this anime I highly suggest Clannad and Clannad(After Story)
If you like slice of life dramas, then here's a decent list from what I have watched:
Kimi ni Todoke(1st season):about friendship
Natsume Yuujinshou(seasons 1-3):about various relationships
Kimi ni Boku:about puberty basically
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai:about friendship w/ ecchi theme mixed in everywhere
Toradora:about a love story(sorta cliche'd but still good)
