Review of I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying
For some reason adult life and marriage seems to be a way more common theme for comedy shorts than it is for your standard anime. And considering the 3~ minute episodes, you would not expect this formula to do much tackling such a complex topic... And yet this series rings true as a depiction of modern marriage, not even being that much tied to its Japanese setting. Of course, each episode is mostly composed of gags and exaggerations, but usually also captures something genuine about protagonist's relationship with each other, their families and friends. What probably helps from my perspective is the fact of the husbandbeing an otaku and both him and wife being to certain extent misfits makes a lot of social dynamics they engage with very familiar. Also, very unusually for anime, the show does a great job of tackling adult topics, including sex, in a wholly unpretentious manner.
The end result is less overtly funny and more witty and heartwarming. It's definitely directed at older audience, who will find its commentary on long-term relationships and marriage relevant, but if that's even remotely within your area of interest, it's hard to find a better short comedy anime. Highly recommended.
