Review of Recovery of an MMO Junkie
This anime was cute, sweet, and a fun rom-com that mostly did what it set out to do. It was also cliched and had an unsatisfying ending. We follow Moriko on her quest to become a NEET. She deliberately left the corporate world and decided to get into gaming, for some reason we're never explicitly told. She meets lots of people in the game, and through loads of coincidences, loads of remarkable coincidences that would be nearly impossible in real life, well... that's the plot. And that's also, in my opinion, its greatest weakness. But it's a weakness shared by most anime ofthis genre. I think it's a weakness that the plot almost demands, because it would be boring otherwise.
This anime's greatest strength is its characters. There's not a boring, stupid, or cliched one in the bunch. The male character is neither a jerk nor a pushover, the female character isn't really whiny or annoying (though her shyness is a bit exaggerated, as usual). The wingman is, well... what you'd expect from a wingman. Nuts, but loyal where it counts, and his character created one of the most laugh out loud moments of the show.
The show's greatest weakness is its reliance on coincidence, and its ending, clearly I can't tell you why because that would be a spoiler, but let me put it in very oblique terms: a story isn't a story without a satisfying ending, and this ending wasn't satisfying. I'll leave it there. But, at least there was character development, and it probably would have been perfect with a couple more episodes.
In summary, a cute, fun, unrealistic and forgettable romp that deserves a recommend but don't expect too much out of it.
