Review of Devilman: Crybaby
As a long time fan of the overall satanic mythologie, dark themes and a bit of fucked up series, Devilman was something I really wanted to watch from the very first beginning on Netflix. But the time passed, I forgot about it quickly, and after all the (really intense) hype was gone, I sat down on a really chill evening with the thought "Oh, let´s watch Devilman Crybaby. It´s just 10 episodes." And well, I must say, the first 5 episodes wasn´t really something I did enjoy. Everything felt really "rushed", I had no idea what was going on most of the time, the characters seemeda bit out of place and well, I was a bit disappointed. But then it began to get really intense, the story telling got "deeper", I also began to get -really- (!!!) into it. I started to notice the music, which I still listen to sometimes, and which really fits to the whole dark theme, as it goes to episode 10.
Also, the character development; some characters might start really "thin", but as everything goes on, you get the opportunity to sympathize (or the opposite) with everyone who got mentioned. I personally love the development of the rappers, in general, I really liked that something out of this genre got brought up so authentic and relatable.
I loved how it showed the disturbing sides of humanity, and that lust (and everything like that) got shown without being afraid of anything, it felt much more "real" than in other anime. It seemed like that -nothing- was a secret, everything might be fucked up and chaotic, but for me, that is just how the nature of everything really is. I loved how they brought up the Sabbath stuff, that people actually go hard there and that they are doing drugs (lol). I´m more than sure that no other anime would to that with such a confidence, that´s also a point why Devilman is truly a gem for me.
When I finished it, I realized, that the whole series really just needed 10 episodes to work out. Even if I felt like that the first 5 episodes were rushed, it felt perfectly put together after the end.
It´s really worth watching for everyone who is open minded and ready to get in a fucked up adventure of monsters, sex, weird conversations and decisions, hard emotional scenes and deep talk about the ending humanity.
Devilman: Crybaby still stucks into my mind and I will definetely watch it again. It got to my favorites instantly and I´m happy that it got adapted so perfectly.
