Ok I'm just gonna put this out there: I don't like to rate anime using numbers, but the characters really are a 10, especially the 4 heroes. First of all, Ren: Despite literally being Kirito, and not showing much character, (In this season, at least. He becomes more fleshed out later, I read the web novel, but don't take me completely seriously because the webnovel isn't completely canon.) you can see that he is the least douche of all the douches, and this is utilized by the story in many ways. Then, there is Itsuki, another not so douchey guy but still pretty douchey, butin a way that is realistic; he makes others believe he is a hero, but is kind of a douche when nobody is around. In most anime, if someone acts like a hero to the world, they're a hero at all times, but sadly that's not true in the real world, and I believe Itsuki is a character that represents the concept of the hero complex that is reasonably prevalent in society today very well. Next, Motoyasu: This man is a simp, but I'm ok with that, because that's a very real characteristic. He thinks Malty is good simply because she is a female, and only really steps into action to same a girl or when a girl tells him to do something. He builds a harem, and thinks everything he is doing is right because people praise him. Honestly, he is probably one of the best characters in the show, SIMPly because he is so realistic. Then there is Naofumi, the one who everyone hates, even in the real world. Personally though, I don't hate him. In fact, I think he is one of the best characters in all of anime. He's shamed for having incel tendencies, but there are many reasons why he shouldn't be: #1: He hates the King just as much as he hates Malty. #2: Raphtalia is a female. And anyone who says "oH, rApHtAlIa Is An AnAlOgY fOr HoW iNcElS oNlY lIkE aNiMe GiRlS aNd So ShE dOeSn'T cOuNt!" is wrong, because Firo/Filo and Melty are also females, and also the reason why Naofumi got Raphtalia instead of mugging the slave trader and stealing the werewolf thing is because he wanted to abuse her while pretending she was Malty. If he was an incel, he would simply abuse her for being a female, but Naofumi is directing this hate towards someone who just happens to be a female. Also, HE COULDN'T EVEN BRING HIMSELF TO ABUSE RAPHTALIA, AND HE ALSO DOESN'T THINK OF HER AS A WAIFU, HE THINKS OF HER AS A DAUGHTER. #3: OH, SO YOU'RE TELLING ME THAT YOU WOULD JUST SAY, "Oh well." IF YOU WERE BETRAYED BY LITERALLY EVERYONE? #4: If he were an incel, he would see all women as pigs. (No, literally. I'm not even joking, this is canon. Not just in the web novel, this is canon. Like, literally as in the literal sense of literally. No figurative language, except for alliteration. In the Shield Hero universe, incels see quadruped, flat nosed, pink, and curly tailed animals instead of women)
All in all, The Rising of the Shield Hero is a high-tier anime, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.
