Review of Dorohedoro
So 2020 has been a dry year for anime so far, but this anime is one of the few that stick out well.Dorohedoro is just wild and i honestly could not have time to breathe throughout the whole thing. Its world is so complex and you know so much about it despite how vile it is.Also, this anime is surprisingly hilarious and can go to next levels of violence at times. The gore in this show is just the type of gore that makes no sense but you love how savage it is anyway. The characters are all morally bad but they are very enjoyable and hilarious towatch. They also have backstory that feels organically weaved in.
I also like how rough and unorthodox the designs were, they were weird but they fit the aesthetic of the anime nicely, it's like if a biker tattoo got an anime made about it.MAPPA really improved on their 3D, this anime actually had a nice use of 3D and the parts that had 2D where barely noticeable.I thought they would cheap out with the 2D, but surprisingly there was some top teir 2D animation happening. The soundtrack is absolutely bonkers yet I love it.Know_name has outdone themselves with their opening and six other endings which are all good(first one is my favorite tho).
I do have some criticisms, The tone is a bit over the place, sometimes a seriously gripping scene or upcoming conflict can get snuffed out by a funny haha moment, which isn't really great because the pacing of the show is weird. Its not fast per se, but it feels like a trip thats lots of pit stops.Every single episode there is new exposition about the world and it can feel overwhelming at times. Its like looking at an action painting and you don't know where to start. But nonetheless this probably the best anime of the year so far or at least it's tied with id invaded for now.So knock yourself out.
(hello, this an update edit from jan 2021 and yeah this anime was my favorite of 2020, not because its a masterpiece per-se but every other anime that i have watched has just felt overshadowed by Dorohedoro, its just that out of all of the anime ive seen that year, i remember this anime the most, and it has aged super damn well in my mind, not gonna lie, 2020 was a pretty trash year with trash anime to go along with it. Sure there were some solid anime like Great Pretender or Aggretsuko, but its just that Dorohedoro has a certain charm that makes it stick out from the rest and it definitely should be the poster child of the fiery hellscape that was 2020.)
Overall 9/10
