Review of Chainsaw Man
Simply one of the best action anime I've seen in a very long time. I was cautious going into it due to its high score and great reviews. Well, I was not disappointed. I honestly was going to give it the very rare 10/10, but there were some minor hiccups that I felt lowered it to a 9/10. Still, that said- trust me this anime is freaking amazing. Music/VA: 10/10 Has a banger openning with solid tracks to set or enhance the mood. The VA's are all top notch. Plot: 8/10 No spoilers obviously, but this show is unique enough that I gave it a ratherhigh score. Sure, we've seen super powers before. We've seen agencies. Good guys, bad guys. But I don't know- this show just does a very good job with its plot. It's never too slow or too fast. It covers a lot of ground and I'm always intrigued at what happens next. I never want to spoil myself with the manga, but I'm so tempted to.
Action: 8/10 Nothing special- but it's good. The fight scenes are very basic, which is why I didn't give it anything higher than an 8. But the show I feel is more than this.
Characters: 9/10 IMO, this is the strongest point of the show. The characters are sooooooooo good. Actually, to clarify it's not the MC that's good- it's the supporting cast. Aki and Power are Denji's (the MC) main partners and they do a decent job. Aki gets a lot of development, which I love. Power is adorable and more of a comedic relief character, but she's alright. I do feel they did waste her potential. I'm sure in the future she will get a bigger role. The star(s) of the show is Makima and Himeno. First, Himeno- no spoilers, but man I can't believe the show was able to give her so much layers in a 12 episode season. I feel in love with her. Then of course- Makima. One of the best character I've seen in a long time. Just everything about her is unique. You can't really tell what she's thinking. I mean you can, but you can't- cause she doesn't really reveal her motives. Her VA absolute nails the atmosphere that Makimi gives off. Trust me- you will love her and you will want to know more. Alright then we finally get the the MC at last. Denji is....how should I put this- kind of....boring? At least when compared to the side characters. I mean, he isn't plain- don't get me wrong, but he just isn't very interesting. Maybe it's that he has very bland goals? You'll get what I mean. In fact, at one point during the show his motivation was way to ridiculous that it kind of pulled me out of the moment. Aaaaaaaaaaand they keep going back to it. And they keep making him be very one dimensional. So yeah- not hating on the guy. He isn't one of the worse, but I feel he's nothing special.
Anyways, definitely watch this if you like action or fantasy (powers etc) type animes. I will for sure watch season 2 when it comes out!
