Review of Gushing over Magical Girls
(very minor spoiler inside) It was deliciously perverse. Warning: if you're a bit of a prudish normie, let's just say the anime will make you sick ^^. For others, it's a rather interesting anime: a girl is fan of the magical girls operating in her town; she is offered by a Kyubey-like character to be transformed, only to realize that she's actually being transformed into... a villain, an enemy of magical girls. So obviously she's a bit bummed about having to harm her idols, but very quickly she realizes that she enjoys it. In short, the heroine is a sadist, in the sexual sense of the term. Sexualbecause, let's not kid ourselves, the anime is very daring in its presentation: it's rated R+ and the anime exploits its rating to the fullest, verging on borderline hentai in some scenes, particularly in the early episodes.
However, once you get past the risqué presentation, you have to admit that the anime is interesting in both form and substance. Firstly, the form: the voice acting is excellent, with talent and a perfectly suited voice. The heroine's style is also excellent : imagine a dark version of the KLK heroine.
Then, in terms of substance, it's quite original to see a genuinely sadomasochistic heroine in the literal sense. Usually, we have caricatures of sadomasochists as villains in anime: it's extreme, it only serves to justify their villainy, it's uninteresting. Here, we're dealing with a genuine sadist in the sexual sense of the term, who enjoys dominating her opponents: the anime respects the character idea very well. This actually leads to funny situations, since a sexual sadist is not a caricatural villain and is instead particularly dependent on the objects of their fantasy; here, she is completely dependent on the magical girls, leading to comical situations where she opposes the real villains who kill the magical girls. Because our heroine, you see, wants the magical girls to live, and even shine and become stronger... to better sexually humiliate them next time. Logical.
So in short, I can't deny the anime is original, it has an idea in mind, and it respects it.
Ultimately, I would say the anime's flaw is being... too soft, which is ironic ^^.
Indeed, once you get past the first 4/5 episodes, the anime, perhaps sensing that it's going far in its madness, becomes very normalized. The majority of episodes thereafter become very ordinary, and unfortunately, without the main madness of the anime, it becomes an average anime. Occasionally, we'll see the heroine losing her mind, and it's always enjoyable (imagine a dark and crazed version of Ryūko from Kill la Kill), but it's much less frequent than in the early episodes.
For what I understand from the fandom site, it seems that the current version is censored past the beginning and that we have to wait the "Ultra Gushing Version", maybe this last version will correct this problem.
In conclusion, I recommend the anime if you are a pervert curious person and I'm also curious to see how far they could push this perverse madness in a possible Season 2.
