Journey to the Beyond · review
No reviews? Don't worry, I'll write one! What should you expect for this anime? Well it's a emotional 4-minute avant garde short film by Mai Yamaguchi that stands out through its pleasantly polished animation, beautiful art style, and its ability to evoke a brief „memento mori” moment. I think these themes are among the most accessible when you want to create something very short yet still impactful. At least for me, it works every time: the irreversible passage of time, longing for loved ones, the realization that we all die at some point, and regret. However, if we look closely, in this film the old man, after briefly seeing his beloved from his youth again, watches her disappear (along with the dog), yet he seems to form a faint smile. Of course, it’s a bittersweet smile (pain is certainly still present) but he continues his journey through space, which makes us realize that no matter what happens in life, we must find the strength to move forward. That’s how I interpret the message of this short animation.
Art: 8/10 (beautiful)
Music: 6/10 (nothing particularly standout, just a piano piece, but it does its job very well, especially at the climax)
Plot: 7/10 (not original, but meaningful)
Conclusion: 8/10 (I really liked how it wrapped up: its kinda sad, but beautiful)
Overall: 7.25
