Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion
It Seems nobody can figure out if this anime is a true masterpiece or an overrated farce that was only pickled up because of the lack of quality in the anime industry at the time. Honestly, sometimes it's hard to tell. Neon Genesis is a little rough around the edges, mainly in the story department. But If you're going to watch Eva you shouldn't watch it for the story anyways, nor the fights. Eva is a personal experience about the human condition and this theme is gradually explored more and more as time passes on in the show. If you see yourself as the protagonist, Shinji,or can relate to him on some personal level, then this is truly a masterclass anime. However, if you can't relate with Shinji, you will find this anime boring, and overhyped, or perhaps not even know what's happening during the show's controversial final 2 episodes.
The Art of Eva is absolutely emmaculate and screams the 80s in every single stillframe, whether you are watching the TV original or the HD remaster, it is still an absolutely stunning piece of word accompanied by some incredible music.
Story, unfortunately did not receive this same treatment, it is an incoherent mess and you can tell things were made up on the fly (as they actually were.) and the comics / 4 additional movies is a little a excessive just to understand the full plot of Eva.
What you should truly watch this show for is the characters, and while there are plenty that most people won't care for if they only watch the show, there are still plenty of great, well written, staple characters. Learning more about these characters and their mental states is absolutely fascinating.
While I highly recommend eva, for the first 11 episodes a lot of what happens isn't too engaging, I would say my biggest motivator for watching the first few episodes was the amazing art direction.
Overall, the anime is highly flawed, but if you let this show personally speak to you, you will see why this is considered to be one of the greatest of all time.
