Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion
Many people draw or try to draw deeper meanings from this show, but I was never able to do that. I just kind of take it at face value. Although I will admit, when I listen to people explain their takes they do sound like well informed takes. I just lack the knowledge to understand these things. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it for what it is at face value. Three teenagers get put through the wringer as humanity tries to survive an alien invasion. They struggle not only with their missions, but also their motivations (especially Shinji), interpersonal relationships and daily life. It was very fun watchingit for what it is. Although the animation isn't anything to write home about, it's very good at drawing and coloring its scenes. The way it sets things up is what made this show so enjoyable to watch. There's always something you want to know or something you want to see.
However, my favorite thing about the show is that as you near the end, there's this sense of loneliness that starts to overcome the tone. Everything slows down, becomes quieter, yet more desperate. It's a very strange tonal shift, but a very welcome one. As for the last episodes, I skimmed through them because I didn't want to watch a psychology seminar.
Very fun to watch and very unique.
