*THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW* The typical harem protagonist: always horny, thinks with his dick, painfully popular with the female gender for no apparent reason, wants to get with as many girls as possible, but in the end a wimp who will never actually GET TOGETHER with one of the girls. Accordingly, most harems are meaningless, don't have a real ending and are watched mostly for comedic effect and entertainment purposes. Sexual encounters (i.e. Where the mc walks in on a girl in the bathroom) often end in a comedic fashion, aka funny music starts playing and he gets physically assaulted in some way. But whatif the protagonist was like your typical harem protagonist, only with sociopathic tendencies, in that he actually tries to have sex with as many girls as possible and exploits their trust and lies his way from bed to bed?
That is actually what School Days is. It is a deconstruction of the Harem genre; it tries to take a more realistic (even if still exaggerated), drama-oriented approach at the genre. Something I've personally not seen done before.
The protagonist in question is called Makoto. He is your average high-school student that just so happens to be very popular with the girls in his grade. Makoto has a crush on the shy reserved girl, Kotonoha, who attends his school and takes the same train home. Being the helpless idiot that he is, he trusts in a kind of superstitious charm to help him claim his crush.
The girl sitting next to him in class, Sekai, who is also in love with him, accidently finds out about this and decides to start helping him seduce Kotonoha. Chaos ensues.
Sekai ends up as, what I can only describe as a “practice gf“, and the two of them have sex. However, since Makoto still technically has a crush on Kotonoha, with Sekai's help, he manages to make Kotonoha his girlfriend. After all, she already liked him because he's the harem protagonist.

But will he stop fucking his practice gf just because he has a girlfriend now? No. Of course not.
Athough he has a girlfriend that he likes, that he has a crush on and who loves him, he just cant stop thinking about the sex he had with Sekai. He knows that Kotonoha is way too pure, too boring for his now cum-powered mind. He wants MORE SEX. And wouldn't you know it, more and more girls confess their love for him and he ACTUALLY fucks all of them. Makoto is THE HAREM PROTAGONIST. He will throw away pure love from his devoted girlfriend, ruin her life and mental health FOREVER, just to get a quick nut.

From this point School Days' genius was very clear to me.

A pubescent boy has sex and LOVES IT. So from now on he tries to fuck everything that moves, shamelessly exploiting any girl that trusts him or likes him even a tiny bit. He forces himself on them and manipulates and lies to them. Even when he is down or he knows he fucked up, having sex with some new bimbo will temporarily distract him from his guilt. He is a complete sociopath and slave to his urges.
Do you understand yet? DO you understand the absolute GENIUS of School Days?
This is exactly how every harem would pan out in reality if they had a MC who knows about his sex appeal and exploits it to have sex with every girl of the show.

I see many people hating on this show because they hate the protagonist and I get it. That is the point. He is supposed to be the complete antichrist of harem anime. Exactly that makes this anime one of the most entertaining and original shows I have watched thus far. EVERY person except Kotonoha is a complete morally reprehensible douchebag who doesnt care about the other persons feelings. And you know what? That's puberty. That's people their age. They dont think about the consquences. Hell if I do! They just want to have a good time and Makoto takes it just way too far.

In the end Makoto gets what he deserves, a gruesome, gory death. A death worthy of a (literal) dickhead like him.
In my opinion if only Kotonoha would have gotten more character background that would explain her immense attachment and obessiveness over Makoto and her descent into psychotic madness, I think the ending would've come more natural since she would have more reason to cut off his head as a souvenir. I would absolutely love to see an "Evangelion Rebuild"-esque movie of this anime, I unironically think it has the potential to be a 10/10 show.

On a last note, what did I learn from this anime?
I learned that you shouldn't be greedy even when your cumbrain tells you you could do better. You shouldn't play with others feelings like its nothing. Treat others like you want to be treated. And lastly and most importantly, don't judge an anime by what you hear online. You might actually like it in the end,
Thanks for reading if you made it this far. Means a lot to me.

P.S.: WTF Taisuke, WHY did you rape Kotonoha??
