Review of Hyouka
Like so many other "slice of life animes", Hyoukas success depends solely on the past time of the characters which, in this case, involves solving mysteries. When the mysteries aren't interesting it's just straight up bad. My enjoyment has therefore been mixed since I've found some endearing and others very enjoyable. The characters that really contribute to this, however, are just the two main characters and the others helping them aren't as, to use a concept from the anime, colourful enough, even as supportive characters. What I liked the most about the mysteries, was the feeling that they weren't Sherlock Holmes ones in both complexity andtwist, they are pretty straightforward with the usual anime bullshit logic always present. So anyone who just thinks a little and knows a bit about the ordinary anime thinking process will probably figure things out. I did on some parts and rewarded myself accordingly with lots of tea. But yet again this, for me, falls very heavily on the mystery itself.
The one thing wich I constantly liked was how they made the "important" scenes, they packed the anime with as much beauty as they could with the lighting and colours playing very well. I've definitely seen better use of this but it was still something that kept me through to the very end.
So to draw a line, when It's good it's good, and when it's good is very much dependent on your taste of mystery and development of character. You might very well like it very much or just feel that they didn't do good enough but it looked nice.
