Review of High School DxD

Highschool DxD season 1 is a great example of how a show can meet your expectations and then subvert them in the best of ways. 6 years ago I personally went into this show with very low expectations for the quality of anything other than the "PLOT". This was known as THE SHOW for horny degenerates that only want to see boobs, and after all there not wrong. However, this show was definitely a lot more than I was expecting. The first thing was that Issei is one of my favorite maincharacters of all time, especially for an MC in the haram genre. Issei is straight forward, funny, honest, and relatable. He is exactly what I think of when I think of a degenerate high school boy, he reminds me of myself to an extent. Not many characters match what they are supposed to represent in real life, but Issei has portrait us perfectly: week, horny, dumb, and desperate. Above all else, Issei is absolutely entertaining and charismatically enticing. This is actually a trait that is carried throughout all of the characters in DxD.
Every DxD character is memorable in many ways, but their personalities really shine in the show. Characters like Issei's parents and his best friends are just a few examples of bombastic and over the top characterization that I miss in many other shows. These characters, although side characters, dealing bring a breath of freshness that helps to gives this show its signature "don't give a shit" atmosphere. Without characters like these, the show could feel much dryer and overall would be worse.
The story is nothing to write home about, at least not in the first two seasons, but it is fun enough to keep me coming back every episode.
Lastly is that I really like the humor integration in this show, it feels dun and fresh, unlike many shows that are really pushing the humor to try to be funny.
