Review of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Reviews if you don't have time. *SPOILER-FREE* If there is something that the tag ‘Mecha’ represents is, most of the times, a turn off for the majority of anime fans. Not because Mecha shows are bad, but because the competition is so fierce that people aren’t expecting the show to improve on, or top, the higher brass. However, in a year with “Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann” and competing with the likes “Neon Genesis Evangelion” and “FLCL” in the genre, “Code Geass” became an absolute phenomenon making it all the way to the top of its class. It’s an original production, with studio “Sunrise” in charge of theanimation.

Animating Mecha’s is not easy and recently we have been witnessing exactly that since most show make them not appealing or clunky. However, “Code Geass” seemed to feel at home when it came to these fights, making them dynamic, action-packed and exciting. The art-style chosen to revolve the characters was very well done and the characters themselves were a work of art with some unique and colourful designs that influenced and inspired future ones.

However, despite killing it in animation, “Code Geass” reached the top most likely due to its plot and characters’ writing. The thrill of watching this morally grey protagonist using everyone and everything to reach its goal and ideal in a political and intricate world, was a sight to behold and an excellent example of the difference a well written story can have. We are constantly reminded and shown that good guys and bad guys are not one dimensional and all have problems and people they want to protect, and that is what makes “Code Geass” so beautiful.

Overall, there is not a review that can encapsulate shows like this in four paragraphs and I recommend everyone to at least give a shot to this amazing show.
