Super Mobile Legend Dinagiga · review
Super Mobile Legend Dinagiga is a fun, well-animated 90s mecha OVA with unique narrative framing, but ultimately it is incomplete and doesn't live up to its potential. I do not mean that the story is unresolved- rather, I mean that the anime is missing certain elements that could truly allow its ideas to express themselves, be those the elements of time, production, or alternate story structure. Regardless, it is fun for what it is. The story takes place at this mecha academy, where learning to pilot a mech is almost like going to driving school. This provides a fun and interesting backdrop, especially to highlightHikari's seeming blunders in regimented testing environments as potentially useful talents based on instinct. Beyond this though, it's just a story about giant robots, and an extra giant robot that can help defeat alien robots. There's an almost ominous element under the hood that doesn't get properly explored, and that element gives a distant Evangelion note for sure.
The art is this anime's strongest aspect, though it is not without its flaws. The animation is smooth and well-articulated, with a great measure of detail given to mechanical parts, facial expressions, and any sense of motion. The use of color is also reserved in an interesting way, which gives the work a more grounded visual identity. However, the mechs, a major aspect of this anime, leave a lot to be desired. Something about the way they're designed makes them look lopsided and unwieldy, which takes away from a lot of the potential this anime has going for it.
The sound is fine, with voicework that sounds a little rough, especially in Hikari's case.
The characters are solid, filling their roles well, though none of them really rise above their archetypes or execute them in particularly memorable ways. Overall, Super Mobile legend Dinagiga is an anime with a lot of potential that shines through even with its shortcomings. If you are a fan of 90s anime, mecha, or both, then I nonetheless recommend it, but for some people I think its shortcomings might be too much to ignore.
