Review of Kyousougiga
Kyousougiga is a very unique anime with lots of charm. It has the heart of a Miyazaki movie, visual boldness resembling Akiyuki Shinbo's works (think Bakemonogatari meets Madoka Magica), and a crazy story like... well, I can't even think of a comparison there. The story can be a little hard to follow in the beginning, but that's part of the intrigue. In every episode you gain a bit more insight to the characters and the world-building. I was also particularly impressed by the beautiful soundtrack that really enhances those emotional moments. I could talk about the story, but I think it's better to go into thisanime cold without knowing anything about it. The first couple episodes might feel like sensory overload with little making sense, but if you're patient I think the payoff is quite satisfying. There are many cute and heartwarming moments that really make you invested in Koto and her family.
Overall this anime was very wholesome and left me with a happy feeling. But despite being cutesy, it never feels pandering or overly sappy. The complex storytelling respects the intelligence of the audience in a similar way that Steins; Gate doesn't have much exposition in the beginning. The characters are fun and the world-building is interesting. I was happy to find this show available on Blu-Ray, so I can rewatch it whenever I want. I'm sure I'll find many things I missed on my first viewing.
