Review of The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
I was somewhere in my house, on the edge of the bed, when the drugs began to take hold. I watched an Anime series that was as aware of itself as I was. The strange vision of a world devoid of a Fourth Wall sprang loose before my eyes, I remember a voice shouting, "What are these God darn animals?!" but as it turned out I wasn't on any drugs at all. I was simply watching, "Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan" AKA "The Disastrous Life of Saiki K." This is an Anime show for Anime fans. Adapted from the popular manga series of the same name, thisfeels like what Deadpool would do if he were a PG-rated series. A series so full of colorful characters, mundane yet bizarre plots, and an MC who is perfectly aware that he is an Anime character in a TV show and also has so many powers that it would be pointless to throw challenges his way. If you know of a psychic power, he has it. All put to use in ways I can imagine using them myself and also for the most comedic of purposes. Add in a supporting cast of lovable goofballs and semi-antagonists, you have a perfect roster of people to bring this show to life beyond just a gimmick of fourth wall breaks.
The music and art are just a means to an end. The meat is in the writing and creative shows of Saiki's powers. Sub vs. Dub doesn't happen here. You need to watch this show in your native tongue. Subtitles alone cannot handle the rapid fire jokes that happen in a given moment. A throwaway line in the background can often be as if not more funny than the one we hear best. To say I enjoyed this show is a massive understatement. It's format of 5-minute episodes makes it easily binge worthy or for casual viewing if you just need a good chuckle. It is truly a wonderful show and is easily funnier than anything on TV right now. 8/10. Check it out. Cheers!
