Review of BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense.
Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. I had few expectations from the start when I started this anime. It is never wrong to look at something simple and relaxing. But what if an anime has no characters, no plot, humor, or good dialogue? And that's exactly what we have here. This anime isn't disastrous, it's still worth watching and I got it through too. However, most of the episodes are terribly empty and have barely any appealing structure. It almost seems like every other scene has been improvised. Among other things, while reading the comments I noticed that this opinion is pretty clear. This anime has by far one of the worst "in-game" concepts ever. Whatever "game" the girls are playing is. In our real world, it wouldn't be on the market after a week.
There is hardly any system, no balance, and not even the players really know what they are doing in the game. To be honest, not even the administrators, which you will notice later. So how did the game ever get sold? '
Furthermore, I find it almost impressive how little is explained in the anime. Things just happen and you have to accept it.
-Why do the characters look like they do in real life, but have you objected to using real names?
-Why do some look like 40-year-old bandits? Can you edit your characters? Or is it 40-year-old bandits playing the game?
- Why are only 10 people playing the game? Except for the important characters, nobody develops, nobody does quests, nobody improves equipment and everyone dies like a level 1 monster.
- Why is Mapple the only one who really plays the game? She discovered so many features in the game and was the only one to complete real skill quests, which made her a really strong player. Who is your competition? NPC? Is it all just an illusion?
- How can you eat bosses and why can only Mapple do this?
The list could go on like this. I've never seen such a poorly presented game setting as here. Even if there were some aspects that I would like to see in real games.
In case you ask yourself, no, the anime has no plot. They are just everyday experiences of the characters in the online game. Honestly, Mapple's experiences as the rest aren't playing. Since this is only a weak SoL comedy anyway, no story can be expected here.
Characters [3]
They are not hateful, but complete stereotypes with no personality or certain traits. Except for Mapple's compulsion to eat anything that isn't on the tree at 3.
Her friend Sally (Buttgirl) is an emptier version of her. Even if the camera angle of the first 4 episodes always liked to show her butt.
As I said, the secondary characters have even less personality than the main characters. You don't even need to look here.
The only really noteworthy among the personalities were the Fire User (towards the end) and the fact that Mapple becomes completely bizarre towards the end. Even if it was "forced" to appear funny at the beginning, they only managed to make their personality appear sympathetic in Ep 11-12. Better than nothing, I actually found that appealing. Unexpectedly.
Music [6]
The intro is slightly above average, but nothing special, both musically and visually. However, I found Montage Music quite appealing and I'm glad that something like this was included at all. Otherwise, the anime would have 2 more episodes. Osts are also subtle. I think 5 might be too little and some myself to 6, although this is difficult to assess here.
Animation [7]
Mostly wasted potential without words. The anime appears mostly simply animated unless you come to the fights. From time to time questionable CGI is inserted where one does not understand the context. For example, you see a lot of fluid combat animations and then there is a character that doesn't move and is CGI. In any case, the animations were impressively dynamic and can be seen with this quality.
Unfortunately, this was only in the fighting.
The backgrounds have been designed at least discreetly, if necessary.
In the end, this anime is just defined below average. He has few strengths and many weaknesses. But it's still worth seeing.
