Review of The Rising of the Shield Hero
I really enjoyed watching the characters adapt and grow, especially the main hero who was beaten down from the very beginning. A very nice underdog story that pits the main hero against the world and still comes out on top. I'm a huge fan of the underdog type, pitting the main hero against all odds and watching them claw their way back from nothing. I understand this isn't everyone's cup of tea and might come off as a cliche show. The action is usually very quick and with dialogue sprinkled throughout. I like how the show actually shows consequences for actions rather than explaining. Givingweight to decisions.
My biggest narrative complaint is that the big threat does get overshadowed by the very character arcs I praise. So it is a bit of a double-edged sword in a way. There's also the fact that the supporting characters fall in love very easily and sometimes their choices don't make sense as a result. Like when Raftalia decides to put the slave mark back on herself.
Story: 7, because it does go intense right out of the gate regarding setting up character conflicts and motivations. While this is a strength, it does break away from what many would consider a normal reaction to being taken to another world. The characters brought just accept it right off the bat and move on. It does have a cliche isekai trope where the main hero is unnecessarily surrounded by multiple women that fall in love with him. This is not to be confused with women who really don't belong in the story. These women serve a narrative purpose to help the hero in being the attack to his defense. However, as unfortunately happens in these shows, they do fall in love with him for what seems like stereotypical anime reasons. It's very quick moments that don't take up too much screen time so I'm willing to overlook it.
Art: 8, Nicely drawn. CGI does get bad when they render large groups and monsters. Doesn't happen often.
Sound: 8, mainly for the great song choices.
Character: 8, the character arcs and motivations are always clear and make sense.
Enjoyment: 8, enjoyable show.
Overall: 8. Not perfect and not in my top list, but a overall good show.
