Review of Black Butler: Book of Circus

This is my first review here. I am writing it after completing all 10 episodes, watching one per day. I have only previously watched the first season a few years ago and liked most of it. I have not read any of the source material (manga). ### Story ### (7.7) This is a pretty juicy story full of mystery, action, and dark themes. It isn't my favourite type of story but it's well established here. The first episode does a good job of quickly (re-)introducing the main protagonists. The antagonists were introduced well but I felt they could have used more action time, especially in the finalbattle. The pacing throughout the show could have seen some improvement, especially during the final battle and at the story's climax. The ending felt a bit rushed with some unfulfilled dialogue, and I thought the protagonist's final epiphany could have been better explained. Maybe 12 episodes instead of 10?

### Art: Animation ### (7.5)

The animation is quite average all around, be it dialogue or action. Fluids such as drinks or blood are adequately animated. There is a small amount of computer generated imagery (CGI) but it does not stick out like a sore thumb.

### Art: Design and Quality ### (8.0)

The backgrounds in each scene are pleasing to look at both in terms of color (dark, grim tones) and detail (clothing, lights, weapons). The foreground elements (characters and other movables) are well lit and shaded. I particularly like how the eyes in each character are drawn.

### Sound: Music ### (7.0)

Not much to note here. I think it fits the theme and setting of this show well. It doesn't steal the spotlight, nor does it put a sour taste on any of the scenes.

### Sound: Opening and Ending Songs ### (7.5)

The show maintains one opening and one ending song as expected. It has a groovy opening song with a heavy metal vibe. The ending song felt ordinary to me.

### Sound: Voice Acting ### (9.0)

Most if not all the voice actors from the past seasons reprise their roles here, no matter which language you watch it in. If you loved the voice acting in those, like I did, this wouldn't be so different. Bonus points for an iconic english dub.

### Character: Development ### (8.0)

Each character is defined well. The protagonists are on quest to solve the main mystery but there is ample opportunity for them to grow and bond together. The antagonists have an emotional backstory; you can't help but feel a little sympathetic. The emotions let out in the climax, however, was a bit abrupt.

### Enjoyment ### (8.0)

Each episode fulfilled its respective part of the story well enough for me to want to continue watching more.

### Overall: Final Thoughts ### (7.9)

The Book of Circus is a well produced enjoyable 10-episode mystery set in the Victorian London era. Provided viewers are aware of the show's rating, I think they will have a good time watching this show.
