Isabella Bird in Wonderland: Unbeaten Tracks in Japan · review
This is a delightful, charming slice-of-life that requires no previous experience or reading to enjoy. I'm sure there's been many liberties taken in terms of historical accuracy, but the author has still clearly done some research into the history and habits of the times and cultures depicted. The main character is comfortably quirky with an innate curiosity and love for anthropology necessary to write an engaging explorer story. The dialogue is immersive, and the overall writing and pacing mature. If you enjoy learning about history and different cultures through a primarily human lens without any distraction from intense plot or emotional conflict, then this isa lovely relaxing read. The art improves throughout the story, and services it perfectly well with thoughtful immersive details.
It's not an exciting read by any means, but it's not trying to be. It does perfectly well at what it sets out to do.
