The story of Mythical Beast Investigator isn’t very original, but that doesn’t mean that it’s unenjoyable! The main draw here is the extremely likeable characters. Ferry could have very easily been written as a bland character, relying solely on cuteness to carry her, but she is interesting in that she is driven and assertive. Those may seem like pretty basic character traits, but for a story this short, they add the nuance necessary to keep the reader’s attention. The manga is only two volumes long, with each chapter usually revolving around Ferry encountering a mythical beast, and then figuring out how to deal with it. Themost interesting parts of each chapter are the exchanges between Ferry and her black-rabbit familiar, Kushuna. Ferry, ever-patient and kind, is well contrasted by this menacing yet dapper creature, making for an entertaining duo to follow. Their relationship is one founded on mutual respect, which stands out among other duos that have more one-sided dynamics.

The art can be a tad bland at the quieter points of the story, but this is compensated by expressive illustrations whenever a mythical beast is being rendered, or during particular emotional sequences.

Overall, this is a short, episodic story about the friendship between a cute girl and her familiar. If you’re looking for something more than that, you will probably be unimpressed. However, if you’re happy to experience a well-executed story that doesn’t waste your time, then I’d definitely recommend giving Mythical Beast Investigator a chance!
