Review of Chainsaw Man
This is kind of good for a Limp Biskit AMV. I hear what a great masterpiece this is and all but the beginning honestly just feels like Jujutsu Kaisen to me which I more or less left in the Null Void half way through. Which I guess makes sense since they're both animated by MAPPA. The gimmick is that the main character, Denji's motive is to be a pervert. "Cough up those tits! Those are mine!" Why continue then? Because I saw potential in it, where I saw a formula in Jujutsu, I saw storylines in Chainsaw, to where it would try to become better than itself. Withsuch a shallow goal for Denji, it was likely for him to reach it sooner rather than later. I'm not spoiling the series, just stating. This is an anime after all, where boobs seem to make the impossible with random bits of falling over. Fanservice is almost a guarantee, I wouldn't have been surprised if it was an accident.
Now if I was right or wrong, I could go on about, but I won't spoil, you might even be able to tell already. I went back and forth with this anime because if I had saw episode 7 any earlier, I would've dropped it right then and there but I was already past the halfway point so it had some time to win me over aside from that and I figured that the scene I'm talking about wouldn't happen again. Just know if you see the lips come out, you can skip the rest of the episode, it's the end anyway.
So what I did was continue that night, I couldn't leave it with that bad taste or else I would dread coming back. Except after that initial next episode, I kept going because the episodes afterward were some of the best, I got hooked. The good stuff about this series is really good, I mean the animation, the fights, I was getting chills during some of these scenes. The narrative seemed to get better as it went on but just had a few rough patches here and there. Still, I look forward to what's next because I'm glad I continued past all that.
Is it a masterpiece like everyone makes it out to be? No, I don't seem to think so, at least not yet. It has a pretty standard beginning and blooms into something more, I've seen plenty of flowers rot or lose its petals too quickly. But it has potential to become something special, a lot of norms being broken. I know I compared it to Jujutsu but at some point Denji's motives themselves aren't what matters, it's that they're so simple. He can do things without caring and then learn to care. He will find that he doesn't win every battle but he will give it everything even for this simple goal. He has the backstory to fuel it all because he had nothing. To turn that nothing into something, anything, makes it worth his wild and I think is an interesting exploration.
Not just that though, it's not just Denji, it's everyone. Where I would normally find someone like Aki bland, he starts to excel because of his motive, his goals and how that contrasts to Denji. They're both self aware but also know when they're doing wrong and just do it anyway because like I said, 'learning to care', we get to see that process. There are a few others that I have my eye on but don't have enough to really mention without spoiling this season.
So if you want to get into this series, this thing can get gore or "mature" for audiences in more ways than one, it doesn't seem like something my adolescent mind wouldn't liked or have been able to see for what it's worth. Take it with a grain of salt and please skip the end of episode 7!!
