Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits 2 · review

Kakuriyo returned after a long hiatus and it was not quite what I was expecting. From a technical standpoint, the modern animation lacked the charm of season 1 and also reduced the dramatic tension of the story itself. Then the story was in that weird place where we're moving from one normal to a new normal but since it was only twelve episodes, it felt like everything stopped at an awkward spot and the ending was not really satisfying. I appreciate that they didn't technically give us a cliffhanger, but I think a cliffhanger might have put some pep in the season's step. In termsof characters, I am still invested in their stories and care about them, although the new animation style made it difficult for me to recognize some of them. The fact all of the scenes of things that happened in the first season were reanimated did not help job my memory. This is why I put down mixed feelings. I feel like if you're invested in Aoi's story then this is worth watching, but if you are looking for an anime on the quality level of the previous season, then this is not it by a long shot. Which is a shame.

If you can't decide if watching this season would be worth it, think of it this way: If you want to know what happens next, watch season 2 but be prepared for it to move a bit sluggishly and lack the charm of season 1. If you would rather just skip to a manga adaptation instead, you might be be missing much.
