Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion

I love evangelion. Whenever someone talked about this anime, there was an aura of intellectuality that I always wanted to have when i was about 12 years old. That's the same reason I saw things like Donnie Darko, it was the movie you only understood if you were really smart. Evangelion was the anime you only understood if you were very smart. And even though I got past that and understood that I don't understand, or think you did, a work doesn't make you smart. Knowing what donnie darko is about is not understanding donnie darko, as well as understanding all the symbolisms and originsof angels or whatever, doesn't mean you understand evangelion. When I say understand, I mainly mean a successful communication between the work and you. There is no way to have a specific meaning for anything in the media, not even if the creator confirms it or something like that. Because once definitely created, the work no longer belongs to its creator. She can and will be subjected to interpretation by anyone who is willing to listen to what she has to say. That's why it doesn't matter what the author's intentions are, if you've seen something within a movie or game or whatever, at some level it's there.
It's important to talk about these things when dealing with something as elitist as this anime because it's very easy to get into this “only smart people understand this” thing than to actually strive to get something out of it. There is absolutely no misinterpretation of anything. All can be discussed, of course, but if someone believes something to be true, it doesn't have to be. They try to take away the value of headcannon and daring interpretations as some character known in the popular imagination to be trans. Because in these people's minds, this leaves the norm, which would be to be cis. That doesn't make you a bad person, it's something that has settled in our minds and society is still in the process of deconstructing it. But in fact, if you feel uncomfortable about it I can't see any reason other than that you have a problem with trans. Headcannon does come from something imaginary of an individual person, but aren't all the stories that have already been told like that?
This all has a lot more to do with evangelion than it sounds. It is common among fans a constant concern to focus only on lore and the most superficial parallels possible within the work. As the biblical elements that are one more tool to facilitate the narrative of everything. Everything has a hype so absurd that it makes the whole anime look like The giant robot anime fighting and that no one understands the ending. Since it's much less about that and more about troubled people and escapism.

The first episode shows how the structure of the rest of the anime will be. The focus of the entire beginning is not on the direct conflict with the angel who is destroying everything. It's on Shinji's emotions and whether or not he's going to get into the robot.
From the first episode the focus is on the characters and not the big events within it all. Sure, these events do exist but they're nowhere near the focus. So much so that when there are only two episodes left to finish the anime, the focus is totally directed to the core of it all, the characters and the themes. No wonder fandom hates these last episodes so much.

A lot of people probably put Evangelion in the shounen category, and look, I don't know how right that is, but I don't really care enough to confirm or deny it. What matters is how people see evangelion as another fighting anime that only has a character because it needs to. And that's not wrong, smack animes are super fun, but evangelion isn't that. And I'm not trying to mask a kick-ass anime with an intellectual layer as if I could be one of those two. Evangelion is actually quite simple.

Shinji is like in every story of this type, an avatar for the viewer to project themselves. And so the anime treats it as such, only it has a twist. Most of the animes, and the media in general, to be honest, emphasize their escapist value. You want to see something so you can project yourself onto the protagonist and experience whatever crazy adventure he's going to have. The entire MCU relies almost solely on this. And that can be a lot of fun when done right, but to be a spacer you have to be running away from something. Ignoring your life for the momentary pleasure the media gives you. This can be quite damaging. Evangelion is a work that criticizes this. Shinji's twist is that he is a protagonist for you to project yourself, but the anime recognizes you for what you are. An emotionally confused and lost child who refuses to face reality and seeks at all costs to keep running away. It's not just Shinji actually. As the anime progresses, we get to know the other characters more deeply and in the end they are all broken down. All carry a pain, a weakness, a weight. They are human.
And it doesn't matter the little fights between robot and angel, the evil plans of the Gonjo or the fate of Earth. In the end, what matters is these characters and how they reflect and can help those watching. The last two episodes drop the story totally to experiment in a more subjective field and many people call it "lazy" as if the creators had run out of money to bank the "true ending" and the money part really is quite likely that this has occurred. But it didn't result in a lazy or fucking product. The last two episodes of evangelion, for me, are the peak that any anime will reach… well after this one. Here it clearly shows what evangelion was about from the start, without the robot pretexts and plots that don't focus on the characters. Right now all we have are ideas, questions, and people. One by one we go through the main characters and see how each one deals with their problems, everyone is running from them. Whether drowning in work, drinking, piloting a giant robot, NOT piloting a giant robot. Everyone is running. Not only that, everyone wants to prove something to others, through these same things. There's a demand from everyone in all of this and it's totally suffocating. And this has a lot to do with the time the anime was created.
At a time after an economic miracle, and more importantly but more obviously, after the Second World War. The Japanese population, especially in this case the students, live in a totally overwhelming environment that demanded much more than what was fair of them. Obviously resulting in a wave of extreme tiredness on the part of society at large and increased suicide rates caused by this stress. Even today this is still strong not only in Japan but all over the world, and this is reflected in the media. Ironically my two favorite animes are about this. This pressure and demand is present everywhere from those who had the misfortune to be born later. Almost like they were cursed children. If at the peak of Aku no Hana we have a rebellion, in Evangelion we have confrontation. And it's in the last episode that Shinji understands that it's okay for him to be himself, that he doesn't need the approval of others or prove anything to receive love in return, he deserves to exist. It's only when he finally understands this that he manages to break free from this escapist prison that gets him nowhere. As I said, it is something very simple presented in a beautiful way that looks to the future with optimism and empathy for those who are also in the process of discovering that they have value as an individual. And this value is not attributed by the activity, but by the perception of it itself. In general, the entire narrative revolves around this. A bold portrayal of the most troubled time in anyone's life, adolescence. The quest to understand who you are and that you are important. Don't run away from problems and these difficult issues, but confront them because that's the only way we will truly be able to get along with ourselves. Before going to others, we have to learn to go to ourselves. And it's not easy I know, it seems so far away and so impossible. But if you're here now it means that, at least, in some way, you're trying. And that's why you deserve to be recognized for your effort.

Eu amo evangelion. Sempre que alguem falava desse anime pairava uma aura de intelectualidade que eu sempre quis ter la pros 12 anos. Esse é o mesmo motivo deu ter visto coisas como Donnie Darko, era o filme que você so entendia se fosse muito inteligente. Evangelion era o anime que você so entendia se fosse muito inteligente. E mesmo que eu tenha passado disso e entendido que não entender, ou achar que entendeu, uma obra nao te torna inteligente. Saber sobre o que é donnie darko não é entender donnie darko, assim como entender todos os simbolismos e origens dos anjos ou coisas assim, não quer dizer que você entendeu evangelion. Quando eu falo entender eu digo principalmente, uma comunicação bem sucedida entre a obra e você. Não tem como ter um significado especifico pra nada na midia, nem se o proprio criador confirmar ou algo assim. Porque uma vez que definitivamente criada, a obra deixa de pertencer ao seu criador. Ela pode e vai ser submetida a interpretação de qualquer um que esteja disposto a escutar o que ela tem pra dizer. Por isso que pouco importa as intenções do autor, se você enxergou algo dentro de um filme ou jogo ou seja la o que for, em algum nivel essa coisa esta la. É importante falar dessas coisas se tratando de algo tao elitista como esse anime porque é muito facil ficar nessa de “so gente inteligente entende isso” do que realmente se esforçar pra tirar algo daquilo. Absolutamente não existe interpretação errada de nada. Todas podem ser discutidas obvio, mas se alguem acredita que algo seja verdade, não tem porque não ser. Tentam tirar o valor de headcannon e interpretações ousadas como algum persoangem conhecido no imaginario popular ser trans. Porque na cabeça dessas pessoas isso sai da norma, que seria ser cis. Isso não te torna uma pessoa ruim, é algo que se instalou na nossa cabeça e a sociedade ainda ta em um processo de desconstrução disso. Mas de fato, se você se sente incomodado com isso eu não consigo enxergar outro motivo a nao ser você ter um problema com trans. Headcannon vem sim de algo imaginario de uma pessoa individual, mas não são assim todas as historias que ja foram contadas?Isso tudo tem muito mais a ver com evangelion do que parece. É comum entre os fãs uma preocupação constante em focar apenas na lore e paralelos mais superficiais possiveis dentro da obra. Como os elementos biblicos que são mais uma ferramenta pra facilitar a narrativa de tudo. Tudo tem um hype tão absurdo que faz todo o anime parecer O anime de robo gigante brigando e que ninguem entende o final. Sendo que é muito menos sobre isso e mais sobre pessoas problematicas e escapismo. No primeiro episodio se mostra como vai ser a estrutura do resto do anime. O foco do começo inteiro não é no conflito direto contra o anjo que ta destruindo tudo. É no emocional do Shinji e se ele vai ou não entrar no robo.Desde o primeiro episodio o foco se mostra nos personagens e não nos grandes eventos dentro disso tudo. Claro, esses eventos existem mas não são nem de longe o foco. Tanto que quando sobra so dois episodios pra terminar o anime, o foco é totalmente direcionado ao core disso tudo, os personagens e os temas. Não é atoa que o fandom odeia tanto esses ultimos episodios.

Muitas pessoas provavelmente colocam Evangelion na categoria shounen, e olha, eu não sei o quão certo isso ta, mas eu realmente não me importo o suficiente pra confirmar ou desmentir. O que importa é como as pessoas enxergam evangelion como mais um anime de lutinha que so tem personagem porque precisa. E isso não tem nada de errado, animes de porradinha são super divertidos, mas evangelion não é isso. E eu não to tentando mascarar um anime de porradinha com uma camada intelectual como se so desse pra ser um desses dois. Evangelion é, na verdade, bem simples.

O Shinji é como em toda historia desse tipo, um avatar pro telespectador se projetar. E sendo assim o anime o trata como tal, so que tem um twist. Grande parte dos animes, e midia no geral pra falar a verdade, enfativa no seu valor escapista. Você quer ver algo pra poder se projetar no protagonista e viver seja la qual aventura louca ele vai ter. Todo o MCU se sustenta quase que unicamente nisso. E isso pode ser bem divertido quando feito certo, mas pra ser espacista você tem que ta fugindo de algo. Ignorando sua vida pelo prazer momentaneo que a midia te da. Isso pode ser bem danoso. Evangelion é uma obra que critica isso. O tal twist do Shinji é que ele é sim um protagonista pra você se projetar, so que o anime te reconhece pelo que você é. Uma criança emocionalmente confusa e perdida que se recusa a confrontar a realidade e busca a qualquer custo continuar fugindo. Não so o Shinji na verdade. Ao decorrer do anime a gente vai conhecendo mais a fundo os outros personagens e no fim todos são bem quebrados. Todos carregam uma dor, uma fraquessa, um peso. Eles são humanos.
E pouco importa as lutinhas entre robo e anjo, os planos do mal do Gonjo ou o destino da Terra. No final, o que importa são esses personagens e como eles refletem e podem ajudar quem ta assistindo. Os dois ultimos episodios dropam a historia totalmente pra experimentar em um campo mais subjetivo e muita gente chama isso de “preguiçoso” como se os criadores tivessem ficado sem grana pra bankar o “final verdadeiro” e a parte do dinheiro realmente é bem provavel que isso tenha ocorrido. Mas não resultou num produto preguiçoso nem fudendo. Os dois ultimos episodios de evangelion, pra mim, são o pico que qualquer anime vai chegar… bom depois dessa. Aqui se mostra claramente o que evangelion era sobre desde o inicio, sem os pretextos de robo e tramas que nao focam nos personagens. No momento tudo que nós temos são ideias, perguntas, e pessoas. De um por um nós passamos pelos personagens principais e vemos como cada um lida com seus problemas, todos estão correndo deles. Seja se afogando no trabalho, na bebida, em pilotar um robo gigante, em NÃO pilotar um robo gigante. Todos estão correndo. Não so isso, todos querem provar alguma coisa pros outros, por meio dessas mesmas coisas. Tem uma cobrança de todo mundo nisso tudo e é totalmente sufocante. E isso tem muito a ver com a epoca em que o anime foi criado.
Em uma epoca pos milagre economico e mais importante porém mais obviamente, pos segunda guerra mundial. A população japonesa, especialmente nesse caso os estudantes, vivam em um ambiente totalmente esmagador que exigia muito mais do que era justo deles. Obviamente resultando em uma onda de cansaço extremo por parte da sociedade num geral e aumento das taxas de suicidio causadas por esse estresse. Ate hoje isso ainda é forte não so no Japão mas no mundo inteiro, e isso reflete na midia. Ironicamente meus dois animes favoritos são sobre isso. Essa pressão e cobrança presente em todo lugar daqueles que tiveram o azar de nascer mais tarde. Quase como se fossem crianças almadiçoadas. Se no pico de Aku no Hana a gente tem uma rebeldia, em Evangelion a gente tem confrontação. E é no ultimo episodio que o Shinji entende que ta tudo bem ele ser ele mesmo, que ele não precisa da aprovação dos outros ou provar nada pra receber amor em troca, ele merece existir. É so quando ele finalmente entende isso que ele consegue se libertar dessa prisão escapista que leva ele a lugar nenhum. Como eu falei, é algo bem simples apresentado de um jeito lindo que olha pro futuro com otimismo e empatia pelos que também estão nesse processo de descobrir que tem valor como individuo. E esse valor não é atribuido pela atividade e sim pela percepção dele em si. No geral toda narrativa gira em torno disso. Uma retratação ousada da epoca mais conturbada da vida de qualquer um, a adolescencia. A busca por entender quem você é e que você é importante. Não correr dos problemas e dessas questões dificeis e sim confronta-las porque so assim a gente vai verdadeiramente conseguir ficar bem com nós mesmos. Antes de ir aos outros temos que aprender a ir a nos mesmos. E não é facil eu sei, parece tao longe e tão impossivel. Mas se você ta aqui agora significa que, pelo menos, de alguma forma, você ta tentando. E so por isso você merece ter o esforço reconhecido.
