Review of School Days
I spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out how to word this review and have come up with the following: Taking a look at the anime as a whole, I’ve decided that I hate it. Hear me out. The anime did an excellent job of delving into what happens when a mentally ill person really messes with the emotions of those who become emotionally invested in them on a romantic level. Honestly, it was very predictable - very easy to tell, based on the main character’s actions, how things were going to play out. Unless of course you’re like Makoto and you’re themost oblivious idiot on the face of the planet. Considering what happens, I hate it. But it’s because of how it happens that I hate it. Things are very extreme in this anime, especially emotions. The reason for that is it’s trying to make a point on what happens when you play with peoples’ emotions and show just how unstable teenagers can be with their emotions.
“What happens when a mentally ill person messes with the emotions fo those who become emotionally invested in them on a romantic level.” What? Well, you can’t tell me, after watching this anime, that Makoto isn’t apathetic and probably sociopathic. Bullshit. Makoto is a narcissist, a sociopath, selfish, and a nymphomaniac. I wanted to include that defense because someone will no doubt question why I said something like that, hopefully that clarifies.
So why do I hate it but give it such a high score? Well, because it does a fantastic job of outlining and showing just how terrible, selfish, and inconsiderate people are. You should definitely watch this if you’re looking for a not very straightforward, more complicated look at romance in anime. Also, it will make you think more about how you treat the people in your life and how sacred one’s love is for someone.
