Review of Detroit Metal City
Detroit Metal City: Leave it in 2008. Watching this anime was a neat experience, it's a short, energetic comedy that knows what it wants to be, clocking in around the 3 hour mark. The focus on death metal instantly grabbed me, and I think they did a really good job on the music itself. DMC heavily relies on its gag humour, which works most of the time, but other times falls flat on its face. The characters all have their own personality and I especially enjoy the main character Negishi and his alter ego Krauser II. The plot is simple yet effective and I don't think itneeded to be anymore complicated.
Comedy is one of the most subjective things in history, and for me the humour in this anime is a mixed bag. It made me laugh at the sheer absurdity of the things that were happening, and other times I sat in my chair with a straight face looking at what was unfolding. This show uses a lot of *rape* in it's humour which heavily turns me off. It's actually a huge part of the shows identity and *rape* is mentioned and joked about every episode. It is kind of fascinating to see this though, anime studios nowadays would never be able to get away with this.
(Note how DMC is obviously not to be taken seriously, still it rubs me the wrong way to laugh about *rape* jokes)
Overall I enjoyed myself watching this absurd show. If the edginess was toned down a bit and they focused even more on Negishi leading his double life, almost in a Slice of life kind of way, this would be one of my favourite comedy's I have ever seen. My feelings are mixed, but I have no regret watching Detroit Metal City whatsoever.
SATSUGAI!!
