Review of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
This review contains some spoilers from season 1 and 2 of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu. Users that haven't seen this anime yet are highly exhorted not to peruse this review. You have been warned. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu is extraordinary compared to other anime I've seen. The anime is engaging, offering a sufficient amount of comedy and mystery just as random and wackiness. Regardless of that, I still desired for more. By fair means, this journey I ventured into was a cerebral pain yet filled with excitements and thrills. Plus some irritations but as well as comical. Up until I had to begin questioning myexistence. Later on I realized that this is simply nothing more than a masterpiece.
I discovered this anime after watching Gigguk's video about Kyoto Animation. From the outset, I didn't generally have a favorable opinion of the anime and almost attempted to forget about it. However, the depression from Kyoto Animation's heart-breaking event and Gigguk's honest expression to the anime hits me and pushed me to watch this anime. And well.. I'm glad I did. Because I just found another masterpiece that could nearly compare to Violet Evergarden.
Story : 10 / 10
Summary : A boy named Kyon, an average high school student gets put into weird situations with a time traveler, an esper, an alien and a woman named Haruhi that pretty much can get whatever she wants. They are in a club formed by Haruhi and everyday they'd have fun with their high school life together as a club. ( as well as deal with troubling situations caused by Haruhi such as time loop and closed space )
I don't think this anime has a proper story, and instead its just the club members messing around. Which indeed sounds very plain and boring at first, but trust me, it isn't at all.
Art : 10/10
Ah, Kyoto Animation. I expected nothing less. The art surprises me for an anime from 2006. Seriously, some scenes looked like they slapped a movie budget into it. The art style was great, and the quality was shockingly good. Hands down 10/10.
Sound : 9/10
The first opening of Haruhi Suzumiya was shockingly catchy, I particularly enjoyed the first segment of the OP. The opening was great to such an extent that I never skipped it, I also sometimes sang and danced with it once in a while. The ending was also good, but what made it a standout was the dance moves ( in my opinion ) and not really by the singing. The second opening and ending of Haruhi Suzumiya was no compare to the first OP and ED, making me skip it sometimes. You know what they say.. If the first thing stays superior to the second thing, then the second thing is negligible. ( not being offensive or anything, I simply don't enjoy the second OP and ED as much as the firsts )
For the voice acting, I think the voice actors do well to express the feelings of the characters. Their voice are fluid and matching to their character. However, I think that they can show improvements over this at expressing the character's expressions. Other than that, I want to mention that Haruhi Suzumiya's voice actor deserves an award for the scene where she sang two songs. I got goosebumps from it until the end.
Character : 9/10
The character development of this anime sort of make me feel uneasy and astounded. The characters doesn't change much, however, I could see indications of changes from the characters as time passes.
Haruhi Suzumiya remains eccentric and hyperactive, and arrogant. However, I could sense a slight change of her personality as she slightly shows traces of her feelings towards Kyon.
Kyon was always badass and doesn't really give a shit. There's not much change for Kyon but he got fond with the weird things happening around him.
Yuki remains as Yuki. However, signs of her showing emotions towards Kyon were shown within some episodes but not as much. And that's about it.
Mikuru remains as an S tier waifu that is a crybaby. She also did show some signs of emotions towards Kyon but not as much.
Itsuki remains the same..( I believe )
As I mentioned above, there's really not much changes. However, this is already enough to satisfy me to a degree where I'd give it a high score, so it's fine as it is. ( just kidding, I'm actually looking forward to the movie to see if things wrap up or not. It if doesn't I will have to edit this review )
Enjoyment : 10/10
| Before I begin talking about why I enjoy this anime, I want to mention one thing. The time loop. Seriously, how many episodes were repeated but slightly changed. 5? 6? I don't know, but a lot. Around the time loop episodes, I felt as if my existence was no longer. It was so boring because nearly everything was the same. But I had to see them all because I don't want to miss out anything important. With just that, I could've given this anime a lower score. However, I feel as if the time loop didn't bother me for some reason after I finished this anime. |
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu is a surprisingly enjoying anime. I had fun watching it until the end. No doubt, this anime deserves to be in my favorite beside my number one anime, Violet Evergarden.
Overall : 10/10
Loved it. Annoyed by it. Irritated by it. Laughed from it. This journey I went into was quite weird, but at the end of the day, I felt satisfied from it. This anime is a MUST watch and everyone should at least try it. Trust me, you won't regret watching it.
