Torajima no Miime · review
Every time I think of anime cats, I always like how Leiji Matsumoto's cats are drawn. They always look super scraggly in the way they're drawn, but also super cute at the same time. Matsumoto was always really good at drawing a decrepit little guy no matter what, which is always cool. It makes me wonder how humans morphed into such an old form. For a special that is just attached to Queen Emeraldas and only a couple of minutes long over the two episodes it has, it still tells a short but sweet story, even if the humans obviously don't have much going for themdue to the short runtime and focus on the pets. The second episode especially seems to hit harder for Matsumoto himself as the special is dedicated to his pet cat, who accompanied him when he first started drawing manga, and the reaction from the characters regarding their old pet's death is personal to him, as it was when the real Mii-Kun the first died.
While the story is very small and obviously can't go further it detail than what is is, (especially since the story is told from a pet cat's perspective), it does its job well to make the perspective interesting for its short story to tell.
Hopefully one day Queen Emeraldas and this can get a physical rerelease again, while both are short, I think they have a story Matsumoto fans would love seeing thats different from his other works.
