Review of The Fruit of Evolution: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made
I am a sucker for isekai anime and this one had promise to have it's own unique spin. Namely, the protagonist is a fat, smelly, and unpopular high school student. I was like, whoa, someone who is NOT a cookie-cutter-style protagonist and may give us a new experience! That was THE biggest letdown of the season because he "evolves" into an overpowered cookie-cutter-style protagonist. That's right, the anime basically tells us that he was a low tier human until he lost some weight. Love that message. Great start. The setting starts in classroom where the class was selected to be taken to another world to....fight.....something...demonlord? Unfortunately, the initial reason is lost to me because the protagonist was unable to form a group with the other students and thus got dumped in some random forest with no one else around. Then, the rest of the anime is the protagonist getting swept up in the pace of others with bunch of minor side plots like someone with untreated ADHD.
I can dig a lack of plot if there are other things: mystery, cool action scenes, character development, pretty animation, comedy, ect. This anime provided none of those things.
No mystery aside from some very simplistic politics between the good kingdom, the bad kingdom, and the demon kingdom. Trust me, it is not as exciting as you are thinking.
The action scenes are not the worst I have seen...but also not great. There isn't a lot of thought in them, nor do they happen often enough to be considered noteworthy.
Character development is almost backwards. As mentioned, the protaganist is cookie-cutter and literally "evolves" away most of his personality. The protagonist's harem of girls each gets one or two episodes to explore their past or their goals. I want to note that these are not great, but not terrible either. Then the anime takes the newly added girl and yeets their personality away to make room for the new girl. And let me tell you that I am not happy that these girls are sometimes animals and sometimes children.
The animation is bad. Every frame just ruins any enjoyment. The anime relies a lot on still frames with people just moving their mouth, so you would think the picture of the still frame would be pretty decent. Nope.
It definitely ATTEMPS to be a comedy, as there are a lot of cheap jokes such as "OMG the overpowered character just got more overpowered. What a pickle!" Or who can forget the guild of cooky perverts who are constantly getting kink shamed and have as much presence in the anime as cardboard cutouts.
So why give it a 3 if it was all bad, you ask? I thought the character designs were cute and the studio did not resort to using bad cgi.
So TLDR: This anime is not worth your time.
