Review of Horimiya
Horimiya had so so much potential to be one of my favourite rom-coms. The art style is clean and crisp, the opening song was a banger, even the premise was decent (having a different side to you that no one knows about). Let's talk about the whole "this other side of you" thing. They made this such a huge deal between Hori and Miyamura, and then I feel like they just forgot about it? Further, the sides weren't even that big of a deal? Hori does housework because her parents are busy and takes care of her younger brother. Okaaaayyyyyyyy? Miyamura has a bunch of tattoosand piercings. Okay that's pretty interesting. BUT THEY LITERALLY HOLD NO SPECIAL MEANING? They made a big deal out of Hori taking on too many tasks like her mother (ie. the student council situation) and then completely dropped this plot point? Instead, Hori suddenly becomes a masochist and has a short temper, which isn't a problem at all but what. happened. to. the. original. plot. of. the. show?
Okay, I get it. A lot of rom-coms or slice of life don't necessarily play into a larger plot. But when it comes to comedy, it just didn't do it for me. It doesn't even hold a candle to for example Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun. This aspect is pretty subjective so if you found it funny, that's great! I'm glad you enjoyed it, just not for me.
For manga readers, yes I finished the manga. But I feel like I finished it for the sake of just finishing it. Frankly I don't remember anything significant other than some stuff from the beginning. I bought the first two volumes, placed an order for the third, read a bit further, got bored, cancelled my order. So yeah the manga was also not funny enough to stand without an interesting plot.
All in all, Horimiya was a disappointment for me. It was super hyped up and fell short in terms of both the anime and the manga.
