Suhee0 · review
Suhee0 is a very realistic depiction of how although anyone can become a celebrity in the internet age, many are ill suited for it. We want our celebrities to be perfect, but humans fundamentally aren't. We want good people and good-quality stories, but in reality superficial and sensational content is what gets the most attention and money quickly. Over the course of the story, the separation between Suhee's online and real life evaporates in the pursuit of climbing out of poverty. Most of the characters are quite messy and can't really be categorized into good or bad, rather as people clumsily stumbling through life. I think themain message of the story is that most things in the world are not black and white, although people love to judge them as such. It is unavoidable to go through life without hurting others or getting hurt, because it is only human to be imperfect. You cannot control the way others see you, but you can control your actions and try to do better every day. I find that since reading this comic, I have found myself more critical of the way people talk about each other on the internet.
One of my favorite things about the story is the vast number of perspectives. We get to see inside the minds of every main character, and even some recurring side characters - such as fans of the fictional streamers - that make us understand that these people have real influence in their world. The author has an intimate understanding of their characters.
This is not a lighthearted read. It seems as soon as something good happens in the story, you can bet that more misery is just around the corner. There are points where it gets unrelenting, but as of recent (chapter 179) things seem to be looking up for Suhee (for now). Overall, I am interested to see how this story is going to continue to play out.
