Review of Devilman: Crybaby
It's interesting to watch a show that has almost no boundaries and see where it goes. Story: 8 Very fast paced and I wouldn't have minded more development but with that in mind all the reveals hit as hard as they should due to fantastic emotional moments. Art: 10 Nightmarish and fresh. Loved it Sound 10: Soundtrack and score 10/10. I love the techo/choral pieces. Perfect auditory representation of the show.Character 7:
Loved Akira and the idea of a demon who cries. I also loved Kimi's design and personality.
Enjoyment: 5
Suffered from 'edginess syndrome'. At times it felt like it couldn't decide if it wanted to be an arthouse porno or a shock value horror. All moments outside these two extremes were fantastic and I loved.
Overall: 7
With the exception of the obviously intentional gratuitous sex and gore, I loved the original execution of a now common anime setting and the unique atmosphere of this show. With the incredible art direction, soundtrack, and storytelling this would be one of my favorite animes but ultimately I felt it was too unnecessarily edgy and explicit to be holistically fantastic.
