It's really not a surprise that this has lasted as long as it has. Each and every aspect of this show is enough to keep a fanbase, from the artist's portrayal of old Japan to the characters and unique plot. The strange thing is, the general idea behind the plot is really not all that at first glance. It's a premise that's been used in a variety of different settings in recent years. It's the way the story is handled that makes Dororo stand out as much as it does. The anime has an overall calm pacing, despite the story line that holds nothing backin terms of the violence and realities of the era. I think it achieves this with it's generally modest artwork, soundtrack and a focus on the backgrounds of the characters that slows things when necessary. Certain plot twists are not hidden as well as they could be, but by doing that it lets us wonder when the other characters will realise points that we already know about. Dororo is a piece of anime history, and the anime pays homage by bringing the feel of the story to a modern audience.
