Review of My First Girlfriend is a Gal

I never thought I would see a show that sort of makes fun of this notion of millennials and their "legacy"in history. It may be unintentional but nonetheless it is kinda entertaining.And by the show, I mean the dub, Funimation has really outdone themselves Hajimete no Gal(My First Girlfriend is a Gal) is a show--I can say that. This show is about a guy who wants a girlfriend and after he gets one, other girls start to get jealous and try to tempt him to cheat on his"gal"-hence the title-also his friends are trying to make him do stupid stuff.The actual story is linear butstill not that progressive.There is the part where they hook up and then he meets the other girls and finally the end where he tries to fight some bad guy that was never mentioned before his introduction.Like every other rom-com. But the one thing that makes this dub redeemable is the english dub. The dub itself changes so much from the characters to the actual genre of the show. It's supposed to be a rom-com, but actually it is a raunchy comedy with an awkward moment in the end.It is almost Ghost Stories levels of innovation.

The art in the show is interesting. The character designs make all the girls interesting .Especially with Yukana,the main "gal" of the series.The way she dresses is more feminine than the regular highschool girl.Just look as the other older series "Super Gals" for reference. Not to be a pig, but she is very hot. I like the distinct lips and the hair. The same goes with the other female characters accept the little girl,Nene who just looks like little girl with balloons strapped to her chest. The animation subpar. The only time the animation is fluid is during the lewd scene. I also like the use of censorship in the show. There is overlay of jewelry hearts to cover the good bits also during the hot scenes there is this background of gal products and the hands of other people are covering the girls it is very nice way to censor things instead of putting stupid black holes around the people.

Okay, this is the best part of the show by far, the sound. From the foley,to the OST,and the freaking dub. It is something magical.The Dub is one of those funimation dubs that the voice actors/actresses have fun with.The dub is Panty and Stocking levels of lewd(despite the fact they tried to censor it with bleeps) and the different ranges of expressions on the characters.This is the case with the main character's friend with glasses,His voice actor was one of the best. He does different expressions like Yoda for example. Also the voice actresses did a good job with the "gal" slang. I feel like a "gal" would be no different than a millennial high school kid so there was a lot of slang terms that was a bit funny but that is only a portion of the hilariousness. There are a lot of clever jokes in this show from crude ones like the log flume one in the first episode that had me rolling ,to the ones that make fun of the actual show itself.The one that had me gut laughing was in one of the final episodes where in a very conflicting moment one of the girls asks for a sandwich. That one got me. Also the voice actresses did their part well too, the main actress had herself a fun time and I can't remember her being like that since Panty and Stocking.Speaking of Panty and Stocking, the soundtrack itself has some similarities to it. There are three different portions of the tracks.Some of the tracks sound like something you would hear on Nick Jr. Other tracks sound like they were made by some synthetic orchestra, and the rest is full of intense and interesting techno music. The techno part is my favorite. They are best to hear when something lewd happens.One track similar to PSG uses sounds from an actual female having sex in the song and it was combined with a lot of pop and i LOVE IT.The OP and ED are techno as well but they are the JPOP types of tracks that are alright if you just listen to it instrumentally.Also there are the sounds used for humor like twangs and sparkles(Im not good with onomatopoeias )

The characters are just regular people except the main gal, Yukana, she was the most interesting . The main protagonist male however was not my favorite. He is one of those shy coward characters who is very awkward.He also has four other inner characters, so its kinda like the cowboy guy in Tatami Galaxy but worse.There is the other gals. (my least favorite is the popular girl) and the perverted friends who were just perverts. There was one character who really made my stomach kinda turn and thats the big guy Minoru. The running gag in the show is that he has a liking towards younger girls but the show and the dub exponentially makes him look like a straight up pedophile. I really have to praise the scriptwriter for the dub for giving him some of the most creepiest pedophile jokes ever.I appreciate what the OG creators were going trying to make a character who is into little kids but thats still insanely creepy.

To put it this way, Hagimete no Gal is not the worst show ever.........if you watch the dub. I am pretty sure that if Funimation decided not to license the show it would be a complete afterthought. But I have to say this is one of the funniest dubs that Funimation has ever done and it has made the show way more entertaining, but sadly the other parts of the show really don't cut it and balance out how good the show overall is.
