Terror Night · review
Spoiler warning
This review may discuss plot details.
While Terror Night isn't really as bad as my review below might lead you to believe, if you come here with high expectations, you will be extremely disappointed. While not necessarily a bad read, I wouldn't recommend it unless you read manga out here like Ash Ketchum trying to read them all. SPOILERS WARNING So let's break down Terror Night into simpler categories. World Building: 0.5 / 2 To be blunt, the world this manga takes place in is dead. The idea that anyone lives a day-to-day life outside of the occult just doesn't exist. Even putting that aside, there is no life to any of the locations thatthis manga takes us to, as if they're in their own dimensions, like this is a Bakugan brawl. Conveniently no bystanders, no witnesses, hell, not even shadows that anything exists in this world outside of the main character and the "side" cast. To progress the story, the entire world is put on the backburner, and it makes the whole story worse.
Characters: 0.5 / 2
Looking back now that I have finished the manga, I actually don't like any of the characters. The only character who might get a pass from me is (I'm not even going to lie, I finished reading it today, and I can't remember her name. To make it worse, she isn't a character on MyAnimeList, and I refuse to reread the manga. I sincerely apologize.) The characters are forgettable at best and don't really have any personality to them. Not only that, but these characters follow every trope in the book, making them extremely predictable and sometimes downright boring. If it had taken even a little time to flesh out the characters, this manga would be a lot better.
Plot: 1 / 2
Now I'm giving it this: the story is not only original, but it's also half good. The main idea of the manga and how it all ties together makes legitimate sense, and it's well explained in the manga. Making terrors to then combine and turn them into a god is an idea that not only makes sense, but it also doesn't really copy any other stories that come to mind (the way the terrors get stronger by eating one another is a pretty common idea, but as it ties into the story quite well, I'm going to let it slide). The downside comes from the fact that all the side stories to this manga make no sense in how they tie into the main one. Like all terrors, they need a storyteller, except the snake girl (if I'm wrong, I apologize, but as I remember, the father said that isn't his terror, and no one else makes an appearance), and even though they only really get stronger from eating other terrors, they just go around and kill random civilians. And while I'm here, why was the teacher in the school after hours dressed like that? There are too many holes in the plot to just ignore, and while they don't deviate from the story, they do leave questions unanswered towards the end of the manga.
Pacing: 2 / 2
The one thing I'll give this manga is that it's nothing but consistent. The strength gain of the main characters makes sense (outside of at the start, where she's just magically stronger than a terror that's already hunted terrors before), and the enemies relatively remain consistent powerscaling-wise. The one thing this manga does well is that there isn't some magically strong terror (outside of the main character and god), and you can see their weakness as if all the terror were relatively level (looking back, there was that woman when they were stuck in the station, but I'll let that slide). From the start to the finish, the manga did a good job of not overwhelming you with new ideas and not falling into the infinite scaling problem manga tend to have towards their ending.
Bias: 1 / 2
This manga is really not that bad, even with all the problems it has. I didn't want to drop this manga and genuinely just wanted to finish it (mostly out of frustration, but it at least isn't boring). I originally gave this manga a 5, and honestly I think my review of 5.5 is fair. There is a lot that is missing from this story, but what it does well, it does decently well.
