Review of given
Given is primarily a story of love and loss. There was a lot to process while watching the series. While grief was the main topic dealt with, hints of other trauma were briefly explored, though not in enough detail for these moments to hit particularly hard. The characters are easily lovable, and the different relationships between are interesting and complex, leaving you sympathising with everyone involved. The music is, of course, a huge part of the series, and it is wonderful. I would have liked to hear more lyrics rather than mostly instrumental pieces, but the one lyrical piece is rather chilling. Coupled with a niceart style, Given is easy viewing.
Of course, I must mention the positive representation of LGBT romance, with the series including both gay and bisexual characters. I was pleased that the angle taken was similar to any other romance story, albeit some minimal exploration of the struggle one faces while being LGBT, as apposed to a fetishisation of gay sexuality.
Regardless of your own gender or sexual identity, Given presents itself as a moving drama and romance that I would recommend giving a fair chance.
