This is the first time I've ever written a review for MAL on an account that I've had for almost ten years. This is to say that Lazurus has disappointed me so greatly that I feel the need to warn others that this show is NOT worth their time. It's a confusing mess of show full of poor decisions. The writer's somehow thought it was a good idea to create a show where the main group meanders for 12 episodes looking for one man. In those episodes they somehow never come close to finding him, even when he's quite literally in front of them. It isan overly preachy show with a message that falls on deaf ears, as I am left stunned by the directions the show takes in the second half. In a show that has too many characters, they decided to introduce an antagonist in the last three episodes that hijacks the focus so that the central conflict gets solved in the background along the B plot.
The characters are underdeveloped despite each of them, save one, having a whole episode dedicated to their own personal conflicts. The episodic nature of this show being a hindrance to any real development as the show fails to juggle both it's character's development and the over-arching conflict of the plot which is Hapana killing the world in, what I stress, 30 days.
The world is on a time sensitive search to find one man, yet it feels like nobody cares that all of humanity will cease to exist, as the majority of society continues to function as if everything is normal. People still go to work, class, they sit in traffic, they make jokes about their impending doom, they laze about and watch TV, there's no sense of anxiety or hopelessness shown in the world about the fact that everyone is going to die. Even worse so, the Lazurus team has no sense of urgency, as shown in an episode where the cast can be seen chilling in the ocean thinking about climate change or something, an ocean they're only in because they fell for another red hearing tip on the whereabouts of Dr. Skinner. The government at one point even threatens to stop Lazurus's progress in finding Dr. Skinner, as if they won't die too if this man is not found. It is as if the entire world has time blindness and such a great sense of apathy that dying doesn't bother them. This is made even worse as they find Dr. Skinner quite easily within the last 10 minutes of the show.
Lazurus has no sense of direction, it lacks focus, it's a bad show with good music and animation. I do not recommend you watch this show. Watch Space Dandy instead. My GOAT Watanabe is washed.
