Review of Gintama
Gintama was my first proper dive into proper Japanese comedy in Anime. I had discovered Gaki no Tsukai and other Variety shows, watched a bunch of J-Drama's and a bunch of anime by the time I started watching Ginatama when it first aired. Honestly speaking, I stumbled on it when I was bored and had watched all the anime there was to watch at the time. Greatest mistake I ever made since discovering DBZ by accident as a kid. Whilst there are a load of jokes based on you having to know about japanese culture, famous people, shows etc even without knowing that stuff you willlaugh a lot watching this show. But the true strength of this show is that it's characters are it's greatest strength, it's action sequences are merely a bonus. It is a show completely unlike all the Big 4 and mainstream shonen, but it actually is the Godfather to all these shows shonen shows that use a lot of grown up comedy.
If you literally enjoy grown up jokes instead of the mostly childish gags we get in most shows, this is what you have been looking for. 15 years later and to me it's still the greatest comedy shonen ever.
