Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion
Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of my favorite anime of all time. It took me one whole year to figure that out, but it is one of the best out there. Neon Genesis Evangelion is a mecha series that focuses heavily on the psychology and human emotions of its protagonists. Without getting into the details, Neon Genesis isn't your typical mecha where they fight to just protect the world, though they do that too. The characters battle to protect themselves, they battle to protect others, they battle to prevent hurt, they battle to be human. Evangelion both succeeds and fails at the pacing of theshow. Characters are introduced and we slowly learn more and more about the psyche of Shinji Ikari and the larger cast. Lots of the show is Shinji Ikari whining about how his life sucks, trying to justify why he doesn't belong, why he should run from battle, and why he should avoid hurting others. With Shinji Ikari whining all the time, the series can feel tedious, which is why I recommend watching the Rebuild of Evangelion series of movies which retells the story but with optimized storytelling, but we'll talk about that series later when I finish it. Overall, Evangelion succeeds in getting us to hardcore relate to the pain Shinji experiences, while simultaneously grating on our patience for the show.
Neon Genesis Evangelion one of my favorite anime that I only recently started appreciating when I realized how hard hitting so many of the moments were. It is a series deserving of its prestige and rank in the anime community. I love Evangelion. Though I do recommend watching the Rebuild series because it looks to be shaping up to be the better version.
