Shiki isn't your typical vampire anime. Unlike Vampire Knight, there isn't any angst or crazy tension between characters. With a unique form of animation, mature theme, and unpredictable story-line it makes for a great distraction if you happen to have the time. With only 22 short episodes and a really progressive story, Shiki introduces vampires into a rural, secluded environment of locals. What could go wrong, right? I particularly enjoyed the morals and ethics at play in the dialog and theme. I wouldn't recommend this anime to anyone under the age of 16, however it wouldn't hurt if a 13 year old decided that theywere ready for an adult theme. Also, this anime doesn't stay in one persons point of view. You see through a wide range of characters eyes and even though some characters pov are seen more frequently, it doesn't really mean they are a main character.
So, if you like vampires but don't want a Twilight-like theme popping up, i'd suggest Shiki. It's kind of dark, definitely offbeat, and 100% original.
