Review of Ghost Stories
The most infamous anime dub of all time, known for its shockingly offensive humour and for bombing everywhere but America... Yeah I found it kinda mid, and it doesn't hold up for a rewatch, either. The thing about the anime failing in Japan was actually a myth, so this doesn't even have the advantage of being a success story. Instead, it's a perfectly mediocre anime with Adult Swim humour added in. The plot is like Japanesee Scooby-Doo; go into a spooky place, get scared, rinse and repeat for 19 episodes. But how's the humour this dub is praised for? It's meh. If you want to laugh, just watcha YouTube compilation of its funniest moments and that's basically the series. A few funny moments per episode, surrounded by filler. Obviously it's extremely crude and shocking on purpose, and at times it feels like they're REALLY reaching to make it shocking.
Momoko's new role as a devout Christian is an interesting direction, and some of her lines age either very badly or very well, depending on how you feel about current times. The amount of slurs slung is also definitely a choice, like they had a quota to fulfill so they had to make at least one off-colour joke at the expense of gay people per episode.
In 2025, the Ghost Stories dub is a product of its time. What was once shocking and crude has become mainstream, and the joke just don't land unless you've somehow never seen this anime or anything from it before watching.
