Review of Detroit Metal City
Note: DMC is short for ‘Detroit Metal City’. A story about an indie death metal band slowly becoming a living legend by setting their gigs on fire, constantly raping their haters, humiliating their rivaling bands/musicians and many more. At least, that’s according to the most fanatical DMC fans who are creating most of these legendary stories. Some of them are somewhat true, some are pure fiction. Whatever the truth is, it always gets DMC higher on with their reputation within the Tokyo music scene. Episodes are half the length of a regular show. They are very dense and all characters speak much faster, but it goes well withthe overall comedic appeal.
Voice acting is top tier quality – fast spoken, with perfectly presented emotions (or totally emotionless and robot-like, when it comes to posts on DMC forum). Krauser’s death metal voice is pure mastery. He talks (and ‘sings’) that way not only on gigs, but in regular dialogues. This is something that real-life death metal vocalists never do.
The jokes are hilarious, but also unbelievably vulgar. Simple animation only increases all the fun. Everything in this show is made for the purpose to make the watcher burst out of laughter many times each episode and there is no need to search for anything else.
On the negative side, it’s just not for anyone. Not everybody likes vulgar comedy full of cursing, aggressive music or having for a director profane, violent and horny metalhead woman.
No moral lessons should be taken from this show (yes, that means no butt slapping your friend with his own tambourine or spitting on punk singers – or even on your potential girlfriend). If you don’t mind any of these issues, watch it and fall in love with it.
Pros:
+ great comedy
+ shorter episodes bring more consistent pacing
+ voice acting
+ music creates good atmosphere & synergy with comedy
Cons:
- niche appeal; not for everyone
Double-edged:
+/- very dark humor, you may question your moral values
10/10 (MASTERPIECE)
