Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion
Definitely one of the most unique animes out there. This review may include minor spoilers but nothing too major! Story 8: The story was definitely interesting, I generally hate the mecha genre with passion but the story wasn't necessarily focused on that element. It seemed like it was mainly focused on characters and their emotions, along with some unique elements that may hinted to religion as well. As a lot may have mentioned before this anime is very deep and it can take time for our brains to process. The story starts as a very sad one then gets better and then goes back again. Overall, despitethe extreme fictional elements the anime was somewhat realistic in a sense. Referring to so many things that people might be going through in shape of characters. Overall the story did a great job at combining fiction and reality in the most creative way possible.
The only downside is that there were a couple of episodes that were mostly focused on the mecha element which I found a bit boring. But aside from that it was great overall!
Art 9:
During the time it was released, I'd say the art is quite unique and beautiful. The characters were also designed well and it definitely gave birth to a new style of anime during that time.
Sound 8: The opening was very catchy and I rarely skipped it and the ending was nice. I liked how each ending came with a different version of the song. The soundtracks on the other hand did not have enough variety for me and felt a little too basic considering how good the ending and opening were for me.
Character 7:
I'll be honest, this anime did not rely on good characters and rather used their flaws as the key point and it did a good job.Shinji is severely depressed and has no self worth and always relies on other people so he would have a will to live. Some call him a coward but personally I think he did not really have a reason to want to deal with anything either. He barely felt any love throughout his life which ended up making him not want to face anything. Not saying he is not a coward but I understand why he is. Rei on the other hand is kind of dull and does not show her emotions but deep down she seemed she actually valued Shinji the most(Along with Misato.) Probably out of the three she is the most likable character. Asuka on the other hand is too annoying, she seemed to represent attention seeking and did a good job at it. Her ego and trying to belittle others made her very unlikable and considering her background it..kind of made sense that she is like that?
But best charater for me was actually Misato, a person who had her own issues as well but actually cared about others but just like a lot of people found it hard to admit to her flaws even though in a way she did.
The characters were mostly not very likable but I think that was kind of the point of the anime. But I feel like some characters could have more depth to them such as Shinji's dad.
Enjoyment 7:
I mean..I enjoyed most of it but some episodes especially around episode 10~15 approximately were quite boring which made me not pay as much attention during these episodes. Also I am still left with many questions as well. But overall I enjoyed it.
Overall 8:
A good anime with a strong plot and good character design to fit into the plot as well. I'd say I'd recommend it but I would not say it is for everyone.
